From a remote mountain village to a future midwife.

Jenu Gurung was born in 2002 in Sirdibas, Chumnubri Rural Municipality–3, in northern Gorkha, the younger of two daughters in a poor farming family. When she was young, her father became seriously ill and passed away. Her mother, now raising two daughters alone while working as a farmer, kept both girls in the local government school.
Jenu completed her schooling at Shree Buddha Secondary School and, after passing the SEE, set her heart on a PCL in Midwifery. Her family could not afford the tuition and living costs.
In northern Gorkha, pregnant women and newborn babies often cannot reach the care they need in time. Jenu grew up seeing what that costs.
“I have seen mothers and babies lose their lives during childbirth because there were not enough trained midwives and adequate health facilities in our village. It was very painful to see these incidents happen repeatedly. This is one of the main reasons I chose midwifery.”
Jenu applied to the Kyimolung scholarship programme, committing to return to her community and serve women and children once she qualified. She was awarded a scholarship supported by HERO, USA, through the Kyimolung Foundation, to study PCL Midwifery at Jiri Technical School. She has completed her first year and is now in her second, with one year to go.
Her goal is to become a caring, skilled midwife and return to northern Gorkha to improve maternal and newborn care in remote mountain communities.

He lost both parents young and left school after Grade 10 to work as a labourer. A scholarship supported by HERO, USA took him through a three-year acupuncture course, and he plans to return to northern Gorkha to treat chronic pain.
